We pulled off I-70 in Glenwood Canyon at the Hanging Lake exit, shivered into the shade and started bundling up for the cold. There were a few other cars in the parking lot and a fresh couple of inches of snow along the brief walk to the trailhead. Hanging Lake is only about a mile and a half above the Colorado river, but the key word is above. Rocky steps and the end of a little stream started us on our way up to the lake. Soon we were in trees and shade and the snow on either side of the trail quickly increased to knee depth. The trail itself was packed snow and ice, pretty good going other than a little slipping and sliding when things got steep.

Here's the stream flowing next to the trail. It's the outflow from Hanging Lake.
