The stream on it's way to Hanging Lake, taken from behind Spouting Rock. The mist from the falls had frozen on the sand and rocks near its base and it was pretty slippery (though not dangerous) going to maneuver around and behind the falls. There is quite an overhang too, with icicles, moss and a sandy floor.

Winter was a wonderful time to visit Hanging Lake. The snow was great, we had almost no company on the trail and the frozen waterfalls and icicles were beautiful.

As for Moab in the winter, part of me wants to say "Don't go! It's cold and snowy. Only visit Moab April through October." But that's the selfish part of me. In reality we had a great time in Moab and I would guess that on any given day in a Moab winter there's excellent riding to be had. We saw almost no other riders and very few other people doing much of anything, which was excellent -- it felt like turning the clock back 10 (or more!?) years. In addition to the rides we did I would guess that the Slickrock Trail (without snow) would be great in winter. Much of Main street closes down early or completely in winter, particularly after December from what we heard. That means you should get out early to eat and don't expect much shopping (but the Moab T-Shirt Shop is open, so what else do you need?!) Also, the first Saturday in December (usually) features the Moab Parade of Lights, for which we received several "glowing" reports. (cymbal crash please) So a sweet and unusual trip. Hope these pics and stories give you a taste of the fun we had. As always, feel free to email me with thoughts, questions and corrections. --Mike
