Lockhart Basin

Lockhart Basin is an expansive 55-mile ride from the Needles District of Canyonlands back towards Moab, exiting over Hurrah Pass and out Kane Creek road. We drove to the trailhead and then rode back to our camp at King's Bottom next to the Colorado.

This is not a ride to do in the heat since it's long and provides very little shade. We had a perfect day with temps in the low 60s. Even so, most of us were out of water by the time we finally made it back home. We also ran out of daylight although we had a pretty good moon to guide us and we didn't have to contend with anything more technical than dirt roads in the dark.

Definitely do the ride from Needles back towards town. Although the ride's pretty flat the overall direction is down towards the Colorado River when done this way. We needed all the downhill we could get! We thought we were home free after climbing to Hurrah Pass...bzzzzzzt, wrong! There are some short, rolling hills and one last big climb between you and Moab after the pass. 'Hey, how did those cars get up in the sky...?!'

This picture shows Mike G. and Steve looking for the trail. You wouldn't think we'd have any trouble navigating a jeep road, but the trail dipped down towards a dry creek bed and there were possibilities in several directions. After checking out most of them we came across the main trail and headed out for a day of huge views and solitude.
